Laptops and desktops are being replaced by tablets and reports are indicating that about half of all the personal computers shipped in 2014 will be tablets. With almost all mobile devices running on quad-core processors, one can easily get their hands on a powerful tablet even at a tight budget.

With the new year just around the corner, we thought we would offer you a list of the best Android tablets available in India under Rs.15,000. The focus here has been build quality, hardware performance as well as screen size. Check them out:

1. iBall Slide Q9703

The iBall Slide Q9703 comes with a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage expandable via microSD card support to 32 GB, an octa-core GPU and the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as its OS. The display is a 9.7-inch QXGA HD IPS panel with 2048×1536 pixels display resolution and in the connectivity department there is Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G dongle support. At the back there is a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera for video calling. The iBall Slide Q9703 comes with a huge 8000mAh battery which is quite a lot for a budget tablet.

Perhaps this is the only tablet we came across in the price segment that offers a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels which is similar to the ones we have seen on Apple’s iPad with Retina display.

2. Swipe MTV Slate

The Swipe MTV Slate tablet has a 7.85-inch HD IPS display with 1024×768 pixels display resolution and is powered by a 1.2GHz Cortex A7 quad-core processor. Running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the tablet has a 5MP rear camera and VGA front camera, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage which is expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card slot.

The Swipe MTV Slate is powered by a 3,600mAh battery and other features include FM Radio with recording, a SIM slot for voice calling as well as 3G data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. In terms of design and looks, the MTV Slate does seem quite similar to the iPad including the white bezel surrounding the display and the back panel.

3. Google Nexus 7 (2012)

One of the best performing tablets available under Rs.15,000, Google’s flagship tablet device, the Nexus 7 (first gen) is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM. The device is manufactured by Asus and comes in 16GB and 32GB variants with a 7-inch HD 1280×800 resolution display with scratch resistant Gorilla Glass, a 1.2MP camera, Wi-Fi and a 4325mAH battery.

The best thing about the tablet is that it runs on Android 4.2 out of the box, but it can be upgraded to the latest 4.4 KitKat version of Android. With that it is expected to receive future updates well before other manufacturers. In terms of build quality, the Nexus 7 feels nice in the hand and doesn’t feel cheap. The 32GB version is currently available for about Rs. 12,000 on a number of online stores.

4. Asus FonePad

Another offering from Asus is the Fonepad tablet (First gen) which is a 7-inch device running on an Intel Atom Z2420 processor clocked at 1.2GHz. The FonePad runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean which is upgradable to Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The 7-inch IPS display on the tablet has a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, there is 1GB of RAM on-board and 8GB built-in storage which is expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card. It also has the ability to house a SIM card, which can be used for voice calling as well as data.

The back of the tablet has a 3MP camera and the front has 1.2MP camera for video calling. The FonePad has a 4270mAh battery, which is said to last up to 9 hours. The FonePad can be brought at a price of Rs. 12,999.

5. Xolo Play Tab 7.0

A good option for a tablet under the 15k budget would be the Xolo Play Tab 7.0. It offers competitive specifications that include a 1.2GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor with a 12-core NVIDIA ULP GeForce GPU and 1GB of RAM. The 7 inch display on the tablet offers a 1280×800 pixels resolution and is an IPS touchscreen panel.

Other than the above, the tablet features a 2MP camera at the back, a 4000mAH battery, 8GB built-in storage which is expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. We reviewed the Play Tab 7.0 and found that it performs almost similar to the first-gen Nexus 7.
