BlackBerry starts rolling out QuadRooter patch, others to follow suit
HIGHLIGHTS

The patch is being rolled out for the BlackBerry Priv and DTEK50, while Sony and OnePlus have also promised to roll out patches for their devices soon

It seems like BlackBerry is living up to its legacy of offering some of the most secure phones in the world. The company has announced that it has patched the QuadRooter vulnerabilities in its two Android-powered phones, the Priv and the DTEK50. In its official blog, Alex Manea, the Director of BlackBerry noted that three of the four vulnerabilities have already been fixed, while the secure boot chain present in BlackBerry devices mitigates the remaining vulnerability. “We’re very proud to support Google’s push for rapid security updates by becoming the first major OEM to patch all of the QuadRooter issues across our entire device portfolio,” Manea said.

Other device manufacturers have also promised to patch the QuadRooter vulnerabilities in their devices soon. OnePlus has told Digit that it will provide the relevant security patches in the next OTA update for all OnePlus devices, including the OnePlus One, which runs on Cyanogen. Further, according to a report by the Xperia Blog, Sony is also working on making the security patches available “within normal and regular software maintenance.” The company has asked advised users only download apps from reputable app stores.

To recall, a report released by security firm Check Point had revealed that over 900 million Android phones using Qualcomm chipsets were vulnerable to a set of four vulnerabilities called QuadRooter. If any one of the vulnerabilities is exploited, an attacker could trigger privilege escalations and gain root access to a device. As per its report, Check Point informed Qualcomm about the vulnerabilities in April. The chipset manufacturer confirmed that it had released patches to OEMs.
