Google Play store celebrates 25bn downloads with discounts, special collections

Less than four years of launch, Google’s Play store – previously known as Android Market – has gone past 25 billion downloads. Precisely, Play store achieved the milestone in 1,435 days — three years and 11 months. Google is celebrating the milestone by giving away discount on a popular apps. Developers participating are Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, runtastic, Full Fat and others who will be selling apps for just 25 cents for five days.

Google will also be offering special collections such as 25 movies you must own, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and our 25 top selling magazines. “Whether you’re looking for directions, checking email or sharing a picture with friends, apps are now an indispensable part of life. And if you’re using Android, it all starts with Google Play, home to 675,000 apps and games. That’s a lot of choice,” says Jamie Rosenberg, Director, Digital Content at Google in a blog post.

Google’s Play store isn’t the first app store accomplish 25-billion-download milestone. Apple’s App store hit 25 billion app download in March this year. However, there are now more Android devices in the hands of users, than the iOS devices; so it should not take long before Google’s Play store gains the lead over riveals in terms of download numbers.
