Samsung is making headlines for the upcoming Galaxy S26 series, but behind the scenes, the company is quietly experimenting with new and unusual ideas. One such idea has now appeared online through a design patent. The patent suggests that Samsung is exploring a completely different kind of flip phone, one that does not have a clear front or back.

The patent was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and was first spotted by XpertPick (via Android Headline). Instead of focusing on technical specifications or hardware features, the document mainly highlights the physical design of the device. As is common with design patents, the filing includes multiple sketches showing the phone from different angles, such as the front, back, sides, top, bottom, and in both folded and unfolded states.
What makes this design stand out is its reversible nature. According to the images, both outer sides of the flip phone look almost identical in size and shape when the device is folded. This suggests that either side of the phone could face outward, unlike current flip phones. For example, devices like the Galaxy Z Flip series have a clear front side with a cover screen and a back side that looks different.
In this new concept, Samsung seems to be removing that distinction altogether. The goal could be to create a phone that feels the same no matter how it is held or folded.
One of the outer panels shown in the patent images includes a circular cut-out. This could be for a camera lens, as there appears to be a small LED flash next to it. However, because the patent does not provide hardware details, it is difficult to say exactly what this feature is meant for.
That said, it is important to keep expectations in check. Many companies file patents to protect ideas they are experimenting with, and not all of them turn into real products. For now, this reversible flip phone remains an interesting concept that shows Samsung is still thinking creatively about the future of foldable devices.
