ChatGPT will evolve into personal super assistant in 2026, says OpenAI’s Fidji Simo
According to Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, ChatGPT will become a “true personal super-assistant” in 2026.
ChatGPT will "understand your goals, remember context over time, and proactively help you make progress across the things that matter most," Simo said.
Simo also emphasised that developers are central to OpenAI's strategy this year.
OpenAI has shared an ambitious vision for the future of ChatGPT, saying the AI tool will grow far beyond a simple chatbot in 2026. According to Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, ChatGPT will become a “true personal super-assistant” that can actively help users manage important parts of their lives and work.
SurveyIn a Substack post, Simo said ChatGPT will no longer be limited to answering questions or giving advice. Instead, it will understand users’ long-term goals, remember context over time, and proactively help them move forward. “In 2026, ChatGPT will become more than a chatbot you can talk to to get advice and answers; it will evolve into a true personal super-assistant that helps you get things done. It will understand your goals, remember context over time, and proactively help you make progress across the things that matter most,” she wrote.

Simo explained that OpenAI plans to expand its GPT-powered products while also strengthening tools launched in 2025, such as ChatGPT Pulse and the ChatGPT App Store. Collaboration will be a major focus, with features like group messages designed to help people plan and create together. “We will invest in collaboration features, like group messages, to unlock multi-player workflows so users can plan and create together,” she said. The company also plans to improve ChatGPT’s core functions, including writing, learning, health, shopping, personal finance, and everyday advice.
Simo said turning AI’s raw power into practical use is key to making it truly valuable. “Raw intelligence won’t be enough to make AI the greatest source of empowerment. We have to turn that capability into usefulness,” she wrote, adding that ChatGPT aims to become a platform people come to every day for getting important tasks done.

Simo further said GPT 5.2 is currently the company’s strongest model for professional work, and future models will improve further. “Our models this year will get even better at coding, artifact generation (i.e. docs, sheets, slides), organisational memory, and more tasks that enterprises value,” she said.
Simo also emphasised that developers are central to OpenAI’s strategy this year. “Our goal is to give developers an automated teammate they can rely on and a platform they want to build on,” she said.
