After an underwhelming first run with its smart glasses, Google is now preparing to give the product a second chance. This time, however, the company is taking a completely different approach. When the smart glasses were first introduced more than a decade ago, they generated significant excitement but also raised concerns around privacy, pricing, and everyday usability. During that initial launch, the product failed to connect with mainstream consumers, eventually leading the Mountain View–based tech giant to discontinue it. Now, with the AI market booming and a stronger understanding of consumer needs, Google believes the timing is right to reintroduce the product.

Even Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin, in a recent discussion at the Stanford University School of Engineering, openly admitted that the first launch of Google’s smart glasses was rushed and the product was not fully ready for the mass market. While advising young entrepreneurs, he explained that new ideas should be fully developed before being pushed to consumers.

He clearly described Google Glass as an example of a past mistake. According to Brin, the company tried to sell the product too early, before it was affordable, polished, and comfortable for regular users. His comments show that Google has taken those lessons seriously as it works on its next generation of wearable devices.

The mountain-view-based tech giant has now partnered with well-known brands like Gentle Monster, Warby Parker, and Samsung. These partnerships suggest that design, comfort, and style are being given importance along with technology. Instead of looking like a gadget, the new glasses are expected to look more like normal eyewear that people would actually want to wear in public.

Furthermore, the company has also confirmed that the upcoming Google smart glasses will run on Android XR. A platform which was originally developed by Google for its handsets and wearable devices.  Google also recently shared that it plans to launch two different types of glasses. One version will be audio only, while the other will include a small display built into the lens.

The company reported that the audio-only glasses are designed for users who want help without a screen. These glasses will allow people to talk naturally with Google’s Gemini AI assistant, take photos, and get useful information using voice commands. The display version will offer extra features such as private navigation directions and live translation text shown directly on the lens.
