A Meta spokesperson confirmed that Hegeman is leaving to start his own business, marking a major change in the company’s revenue and advertising operations. Hegeman, who took over as CRO late last year, has played a key role in developing Meta’s global advertising ecosystem and shaping monetisation strategies for Facebook and Instagram, the company’s financial backbone.
During his time at Meta, Hegeman led teams in charge of ads, feed, notifications, and integrity, giving him big control over the company’s core revenue-generating products. According to the report, his departure comes at a critical time for the company, which is grappling with concerns about rising AI spending and long-term profitability.
Following Hegeman’s departure, Meta has named senior executive Andrew Bocking to lead its advertising and business messaging divisions. Bocking, who has been with Meta for over a decade, previously led the company’s advertising product group and was instrumental in developing AI-powered ad solutions like the Meta Advantage+ automation suite.
Clara Shih, who joined last year to oversee Meta’s Business AI initiatives, is also leaving her position due to a family bereavement, the company confirmed in a separate change.
The executive departures come as Meta faces increased investor scrutiny over the company’s growing investment in AI infrastructure. Even though Meta’s third-quarter revenue was higher than predicted, the company also projected much higher expenses in 2026 related to its AI roadmap, which led to a dramatic decline in its share price.
