Meta is reportedly preparing to launch its first pair of smart glasses with a built-in display as early as next month. Internally called Hypernova, the device is seen as a step toward Meta’s long-term goal of developing full-blown augmented reality (AR) glasses.

Unlike Meta’s current Ray-Ban smart glasses, which are priced between $200 and $400 and don’t feature a screen, Hypernova will come with a small display on the right lens. According to Bloomberg, this display is expected to show notifications, alerts, and mini apps. To control the glasses, users will likely have to pair them with a neural wrist accessory, the same one tested with the Orion AR prototypes.
When Meta first began developing Hypernova, the glasses were estimated to be priced at least $1,000, with some people suggesting it could even go up to $1,400. Such a price would have placed the glasses in the same league as a high-end iPhone. This would also make them far more expensive than most current smart glasses on the market.
Now, however, Meta has managed to cut costs, and the starting price of Hypernova could be around $800. The company is said to be accepting lower profit margins on the product in order to make it more attractive to buyers. This strategy is often used to build demand for new technology.
It’s important to note that $800 is likely just the starting price. Depending on the chosen frame styles or the addition of prescription lenses, the final cost for many buyers may be higher.
