HIGHLIGHTS

The Redmi Y2 is the rebranded Redmi S2 smartphone, which was launched in China last month. It is a selfie-centric handset which features a 16MP front-facing sensor with f/2.0 aperture and comes with dual rear cameras.

Xiaomi announced its Redmi Y2 last week and it goes on sale today at 12 PM via Amazon.in. The smartphone will be available for purchase via Mi Home and Mi.com as well. It comes in two variants, one with 3GB RAM/32GB internal storage, which is priced at Rs 9,999, and another with 4GB RAM/64GB storage that will cost you Rs 12,999. It’s interesting that Xiaomi chose to launch the device just months after launching the Redmi 5 (review) and that too around the same price. The Redmi Y2 is equipped with a 16MP front-facing camera for selfie-addicts, keeps up with the trend with an 18:9 display aspect ratio and also comes with the face unlock option.

There are also some launch offers with the device. Those who are buying the smartphone using ICICI credit and debit cards will get to avail an instant Rs 500 discount. Airtel subscribers will also get up to 240GB of free data with the smartphone, along with a Rs 1,800 instant cashback. However, the offer is only applicable when they perform recharges worth Rs 199 or Rs 448 via the My Airtel App. After the recharge, the user will receive 36 discount coupons, each worth Rs 50, in their MyAirtel app.

The Redmi Y2 comes in Dark Grey, Rose Gold and Gold colours. In terms of design, the smartphone sports a metal unibody design with a vertical dual camera setup on the rear. Coming to the specifications, the Redmi Y2 features a 5.99-inch HD+ display and is powered by a 14nm Snapdragon 625 processor, which is clocked at 2 GHz.

As mentioned earlier, the smartphone is selfie-centric and is equipped with a 16MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture. The front shooter makes use of what the company calls “Super Pixel” process, which combines four pixels into a single large one but this is essentially Pixel Binning. The device relies heavily on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance captured images using Xiaomi's Beautify 4.0 software. On the rear, the Redmi Y2 sports a 12MP + 5MP cameras that support Portrait photography. Additionally, the smartphone runs on MIUI 9.5 based on Android Oreo 8.1 out-of-the-box and runs on 3,080mAh battery. You can read out first impressions of the smartphone here.
