Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G variant will also have the company’s smart antenna switching technology to gain download speeds up to 2Gbps.

Just a few hours after OnePlus announced that it will be the first company to launch a commercial 5G smartphone with Snapdragon 855, its rival Xiaomi showcased its first 5G mobile phone, the Xiaomi Mix 3 5G, at the China Mobile Partner Conference. The smartphone is equipped with Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 855 processor and X50 5G modem to work on the 5G network. Xiaomi says that the smartphone will also have the company’s smart antenna switching technology to reach the download speeds up to 2Gbps.

According to a report, Xiaomi MIX 3 5G variant successfully connected to the 5G network during the live demonstration, and the presenter browsed web pages and played a video. The company says that in 2016, it set up a 5G pre-research team to conduct an in-depth research on the 5G standard. In early 2017, Xiaomi launched the 5G mobile phone design and in September 2018, the company opened 5G signaling and data link connection, the report notes.

The smartphone manufacturer says that apart from antenna switching technology, it will also use its own Internet of Things (IoT) tech to jointly promote 5G in the smart home segment with China Mobile. Citing Xiaomi, the report also says that the company hopes to achieve online playback of 8K ultra-high definition VR video, 3D holographic video call and 3D AR street view navigation with 5G. When it comes to design, the report says that Xiaomi Mix 3 5G variant retains several features of the regular version, such as magnetic power slide design, four-curved ceramic body, among other features.

At the ongoing Qualcomm Annual Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau announced that the company will be the first to launch a 5G commercial smartphone that will leverage the power of the Snapdragon 855. Without mentioning any names, he said that the 5G phone will make use of the 5G-variant of the Snapdragon 855 which will be paired with Qualcomm’s X50 modem along with the mmWave and sub-6 GHz antenna module to deliver 5G connectivity in select markets like Europe and UK.
