Vodafone has launched a new service for its subscribers, simply called the Music Download Service, allowing them to download music through GPRS or EDGE. What seems to be the best part of the service is that it costs just Rs.1 per song, with no data transfer charges applicable. The songs are available in mp3 format.
The music library is quite large, with a wide range of songs arranged in categories, from international hits to Bollywood. The library also appears to be growing in size. The service is available in two packages, a daily package for Rs. 5, and a monthly package for Rs. 150, both allowing 5 songs to be downloaded per day. If you want to download more than 5 songs, bear in mind that Vodafone will charge Rs.25 for every extra song.
While the song quality is not very high (approximately 48kpbs), the nominal Rs.1 per song charge seems quite viable. Vodafone users can subscribe to the service by SMSing 'Song' to 111. The songs are DRM-free, and can therefore be heard on any other mp3 device, and will also be featured on your My Songs page at the Vodafone Music Download Service, so that they can be downloaded again for free in case you lose or delete the songs from your device.
