Uninor to refund balance of remaining customers in Mumbai and Kolkata
HIGHLIGHTS

In a major respite to remaining Uninor customers in Kolkata and Mumbai, the operator has been asked by the TRAI to refund their pending balance and help port out.

Uninor is going to refund balance of accounts belonging to its remaining customers in Mumbai and Kolkata circles following the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) directives in this regard. The operator has been given 15 days of time to do so. Uninor has 10,12,630 customers in Mumbai and Kolkata.

The TRAI in a statement released last week noted that several subscribers could not use the remaining balance of their mobile accounts due to Uninor’s “sudden discontinuance” and did not have enough time to switch their numbers to other operators in their respective service areas.

In order to get a refund, customers will have to carry their identity proof along with Uninor SIM cards. “Uninor will verify the unutilized balance on the basis of SIM card and pay out cash refunds on the spot,” says Uninor in a statement.

Uninor will be helping customers switch network through a helpline number – 9175091750.

“With the TRAI directive, Uninor will immediately begin offering porting codes to its Mumbai subscribers. The company started the refunding process at five of its stores in Mumbai from Thursday. Till Sunday, Uninor had disbursed over Rs 4 lakh as refunds,” the company added in its statement.

Uninor says both the facilities will remain open for 15 days and would be extended if required.

It may be recalled Uninor is one of the telecom operators, whose pan-India licence was revoked by the Supreme Court last year. The operator did not participate in the November 2G auctions and is supposed to cease operations.
