TRAI recommends FDD technology for the rollout of premium 4G services
The telecom regulator endorses use of FDD technology, noting that the technology is used in a number of markets across the world. India, however, has been using LTE technology for 4G rollout.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended adoption of FDD technology for the 700MHz band, for the roll-out of 4G services in the country. The 700MHz band is believed to be the premium spectrum band. It’s notable operators have launched 4G services using the LTE-TDD, while in various parts of the world FDD-LTE is the technology used for 4G services.
The TRAI in its recommendations on IMT – Advanced mobile services broadband services said: “APT700 band plan should be adopted for the 700MHz spectrum band (698-806MHz) with FDD based 2×45 MHz frequency arrangement.”
Global industry body GSM Association (GSMA) has lauded the regulator’s recommendation on usage of the FDD technology for 700MHz band.
“The GSMA welcomes decision to recommend the full 2x45MHz APT band plan for allocation of the 700MHz spectrum band to deliver mobile broadband services in the country,” GSMA Chief Government and Regulatory Affairs Officer Tom Phillips said in a statement.
“India’s decision follows the earlier adoption or active consideration of the APT band plan by many Asia Pacific countries including Australia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Taiwan, as well as by a number of markets in Latin America,” GSMA said.
“As more countries in the Asia Pacific region follow India’s lead, greater regional harmonisation will drive economies of scale in the mobile handset market, reduce end user costs and enable Asian consumers to roam seamlessly throughout the region,” the statement added.
