TRAI directs operators to inform users about service termination
TRAI has directed Tata Teleservices, Videocon, Uninor and MTS, who haven't won spectrum in November auction, to inform their subscribers about the discontinuation of services within the next 10 days.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRA) has directed the telecom operators who had lost their licences to inform subscribers within 10 days about service discontinuation in circles where they didn’t win spectrum. The licences of Videocon Telecommunications, Unitech Wireless (Uninor), Sistema Shyam Teleservices (MTS) and Tata Teleservices are expiring on January 18, 2013.
The termination of services will impact about 2.6 crore subscribers of these telecom operators. So far, only Tata Teleservices and Uninor have informed users about service termination. Tata informed its users Assam, North East and Jammu and Kashmir that its services shall stand terminated from mid-night of January 18, 2013.
Uninor recently informed its users about service termination in West Bengal and Kolkata circles and stopped sales of new SIMs and recharge. Uninor also asked users to shift to other network. Read more about Uninor walking away from West Bengal and Kolkata circles here.
TRAI asked all these operators to inform “all its existing subscribers, in such service areas, either in writing or through SMS, within 10 days of issue of this direction and every new subscriber at the time of their enrollment to its network the date of discontinuance of its services.”
Back in February this year, the Supreme Court cancelled 122 licences including Uninor’s 22 licences, Loop Telecom (21), Sistema Shyam (21), Idea Cellular including Spice Communications (13), Videocon (21), Etisalat DB formerly Swan Telecom (15), S-Tel (6) and Tata Teleservices (3 CDMA licences).
