HIGHLIGHTS

Sony's Xperia S, Xperia SL and Xperia Acro S smartphones start receiving an Android 4.1 firmware update.

Sony has rolled out its firmware update for the Xperia S, Xperia SL and Xperia Acro S smartphones. The new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will bring performance and stability improvements in the Sony devices.

The latest firmware update include better 2G network connectivity, enhanced full-HD video recording and access to Google Now by long-pressing the home key. A Quick double-press will show the list of recently used apps. The update has also fixed the volume up bug and ensures that the volume up button is fully responsive.

The Exchange Active Sync has also been streamlined for email settings while using an encrypted set-up. The update will keep third party apps preferences intact even after a quick reboot. The update will also bring proper notifications for low battery levels and power consumption has also been optimised for a longer battery life. The company has also posted a detailed change-log that includes fixes for apps, hardware, battery, camera and UI.

The new firmware update has been rolled out OTA. The Xperia blog states that the timing and availability of the update will vary from market to market. Sony has still not revealed whether it will be rolling out the Android 4.2 update for the devices anytime soon.

Sony had recently rolled out a firmware update for its Xperia Z and Xperia ZL devices as well. The new update has brought smooth boot animation to the devices along with efficient RAM management and improved 3G connectivity. Other improvements include a smoother Home launcher, new UI for Update Center and improved touch response for the devices.
