Sony launches Xperia Z1 and SmartWatch 2 in India

A day after Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch, Sony has announced the launch of the latest flagship smartphone Xperia Z1 and SmartWatch 2 in India.

Sony’s Xperia Z1 has been officially launched in India at Rs. 44,990 almost two weeks after the handset was showcased at the IFA 2013 event.

The latest flagship sports a 5-inch Full HD display. It runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS and is powered by 2.2 GHz Qualcomm MSM8974 quad-core processor along with 2GB of RAM. The Xperia Z1 has 16GB built-in storage and supports additional storage up to 64GB via microSD. The smartphone comes with a 3,000mAh battery.

The Xperia Z1 comes the company’s “G Lens” with a 27mm wide angle and bright f2.0 aperture, a custom made large 1/2.3-type CMOS image sensor Exmor RS for the phone with 20.7MP and a BIONZ for mobile image processing engine.

In terms of connectivity, the Xperia Z1 supports 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi and WiFi Hotspot functionality, and NFC. Sony is offering free access to movies, songs and TV shows (under the Sony Music, Sony Entertainment and Sony Pictures brands) with the new smartphone.

Sony is offering 8GB of data free on Vodafone, free accidental insurance for six months and EMI schemes with the Xperia Z1.

The company also introduced its QX10 and the QX100 “lens style “ cameras, which are priced Rs 12,990 and Rs 24,990, respectively. The Sony QX10 sports 18.2MP resolution while the QX100 has resolution of 20.2MP.

Sony has also launched the SmartWatch 2 in India. The smartwatch, pitted against the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, sports 1.6MP camera. The Sony smartwatch comes with the ability to handle phone calls (dial, answer, reject), can send a command to the smartphone to take a photo, control presentations using the Presentation Pal app, control media playback on the phone and even read emails when not connected to the phone.

The new Sony device is considered to be a major upgrade over the previous SmartWatch, and offers the wider compatibility and NFC capability. The Sony SmartWatch 2 has been priced at Rs. 14,990.
