Samsung’s Galaxy S7 may feature a foldable display
Samsung is reportedly planning to release folding displays for its next flagship Galaxy S7 smartphone in April, 2016.
Samsung filed a patent for a smartphone with a folding display last year, now according to reports the Korean giant is planning to launch its flagship Galaxy S7 smartphone with a folding display as early as April 2016.
According to Business Korea, the new flexible screen tech will be foldable and rollable. However this doesn't necessarily mean that you will be able to fold the smartphone into a square and put it in your pocket. Bendable screens may hit the market but other components, like cameras, batteries and processors may not be quite so flexible.
Samsung had unveiled its bendable tablet at the MWC in Barcelona last year. The tablet can be bent at 90 degrees and can be used as a tablet or a laptop, with the lower half functioning as a keyboard and the upper half as a display screen. At that time a Samsung spokesperson had announced that the Korean giant will launch its foldable portfolio in early 2015. However, the company did not announce any device with a flexible screen but instead launched the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge smartphone which has edge to edge screens.
An official from Samsung Display stated the time is right for this mind-bending technology. “The industry believes that the commercialization of foldable smartphones will be possible in 2016."
Apart from Samsung, electronics giant LG Display is also working on flexible screens, but the company's main focus is transparent displays. An LG official stated, “The development of display technology that creates a virtual space on glass is already completed, and even a promotional prototype is available. However, it will take time until the product becomes commercialized due to mass production according to demand and stable supply.”
