Samsung Galaxy S6 Active rugged smartphone unveiled

Samsung has officially announced the rugged Galaxy S6 Active smartphone with a shock, dust and water resistant body. The smartphone will be available as an AT&T exclusive in US and will begin shipping on June 12. 

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active is a rugged version of the company's flagship device the Galaxy S6. The Galaxy S6 Active has a the same 5.1 inch QHD Super Amoled display with 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution and 576 ppi pixel density. It is powered by an Exynos 7420 octa-core 64-bit processor and runs Android 5.0.2 out of the box. However the Galaxy S6 Active which is meant for rugged outdoor use, supports a massive 3500 mAh battery that according to company claims delivers up to 23h of talk time of 3G and up to 57 hours of music play. For protection the smartphone is surrounded by an additional frame instead of the glass back of the S6. The shock, dust and water resistant smartphone is designed to withstand drops from 4 feet or less and can be submerged into 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. The company has also removed the single home button, capacitive keys as well as the fingerprint sensor in favor of three hardware buttons.

Connectivity options included in the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active are WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, NFC, GPS and microUSB. It comes with inbuilt accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, heart rate and barometer sensors. It has a non expandable 32 GB internal memory. The smartphone has a 16 MP rear-facing camera with LED Flash and a 5 MP front camera. The smartphone is available in white camo, blue camo, and gray color variants. AT&T Next is offering the Galaxy S6 Active with $0 down payment, with a $695 (Rs 44,500 approx) cost split into monthly payments for a 20, 24, or 30 months.

Apart from the Galaxy S6 Active, Samsung is also reportedly planning to launch the bigger Galaxy S6 Plus. The phablet will have similar specifications as the flagship S6 device, but with a bigger 5.5” Super AMOLED curved dual-edge display and is expected to be powered by a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor. According to rumors the device will not come with the S-Pen functionality. The S6 Plus is expected to be launched in the next few weeks.
