HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung is likely to release an updated version of its popular Galaxy S III smartphone. The update is expected to include, among other things, an improved battery life and HD display.

Even as fans await for the  Samsung Galaxy S IV launch event today, new rumours suggest the Korean manufacturer is readying a revamped version of its 2012 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III. According to rumours, the new Galaxy S III edition will have improved display, battery and wireless charging.

The fresh rumours come via Russian insider Eldar Murtazin, who previously predicted about the Galaxy S IV launch date. Though there’s no information on what ‘better’ display could be, it is expected the refreshed Galaxy S III will feature an updated HD display, although it isn’t definitive if it will be 1080p.

While wireless charging will be built-in, the battery capacity will be bumped up to 2,400 mAh – 300 mAh more than in the original Galaxy S III.

GSMArena in its report points to Samsung’s tradition of revamping old flagship devices. The Korean manufacturer has previously launched a refresh edition of the original Galaxy S with the Galaxy S Plus and Advance, and the recent Galaxy S II Plus for the original Galaxy S II.

The Samsung Galaxy S III has been a massive hit since it debut on May 3, 2012. According to an estimate, Samsung has so far sold 40 million units of the S III worldwide. Moreover, the Galaxy S III is estimated to account for 9.2 percent of the global market, becoming the most popular smartphone followed by its predecessor Galaxy S II with 8.2 percent share of the global market. Overall, Samsung has a 47 percent share of the global Android market.

The official announcement regarding an updated Samsung Galaxy S III is expected after some time of the Galaxy S IV launch. In the meanwhile, read our detailed review of the Samsung Galaxy S III here.
