Samsung has announced that it will release the Android 2.3 update for the Galaxy S, specifically the Gingerbread 2.3.3 update meant for the single core 1GHz Samsung Galaxy I9000.

Samsung had decided to take an initiative on what it had promised and started recently began pushing hard for a mid-April roll-out for the Galaxy S. For a while now, online forums have been floating with many custom ROMs based on the Nexus S, solely for the purpose of rooting the I9000, much prior to the announcement of the official ROM. With many new features added to the Galaxy S, Samsung has majorly focused on the resource management of the OS post installation, regarding the fix of a certain lag induced on the device while multiple apps are open.

With many newer smartphones than the Galaxy S out now in the wild, this is a welcome update that will add a little more longevity to an already solid smartphone, especially with its more powerful younger dual core brother, the Galaxy S II, about to hit the shelves.

HTC’s Desire family should also be getting some Gingerbread goodness before the month is over.
