In the world’s second largest smartphone market, Samsung used to have the final say. However, over the past few years, as multiple reports have revealed, Chinese manufacturers have taken over with Xiaomi claiming the top spot followed by the likes of Honor, Realme, Oppo, Vivo and more. Now, in a bid to compete more against the Chinese OEMs, Samsung will launching a new lineup of smartphones — Galaxy M. The lineup will be positioned as budget smartphones and will arrive first in India on January 28.
The Galaxy M series will be sold exclusively via Amazon India and Samsung’s own e-commerce portal. The company claims the phones will deliver “power-packed” performance without revealing what the specs will be like for the phones.
The phones will reportedly be named Galaxy M10, M20 and M30 as revealed by leaks before. The phones will also roll out to other global markets soon after the launch in India. While the flagship Samsung Galaxy S10 series is due to launch on February 20, the M series will be the first Samsung phone to launch this year.
In an interview to Reuters, Samsung India Senior Vice President told Reuters that the phones will feature large batteries with fast charging. It confirms an earlier report that claimed the Galaxy M20 will feature a massive 5,000mAh battery — The highest capacity ever seen on a Samsung phone. The phone has been developed and made in India and will be priced around Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 according to the Reuters report.
Previous leaks have revealed the entry-level Galaxy M10 will sport a 5.6-inch LCD display and come powered by the Exynos 7870 SoC along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal memory with a 3000mAh battery powering it all. A 13MP camera is reported to be present on the back while up front, there will be a 5MP shooter.
The Galaxy M20 will reportedly sport a 6.1-inch LCD panel with the Exynos 7885 SoC under the hood. The phone will similarly have 3GB RAM but with 64GB storage and a large 5,000mAh battery. A dual camera unit (12+5MP) will be present on the back and an 8MP camera on the front for selfies.
The Galaxy M30 is the most interesting out of the lot, however. Earlier leaks have revealed the M30 will sport an Infinity U display (with a waterdrop notch) along with a 5,000mAh battery. The phone will also adopt a triple-camera setup on the back, much like the Galaxy A7 with 13MP+5MP+5MP sensors. On the front, it is expected to come with a 16MP sensor for selfies. Geekbench listing has revealed the phone will be powered by the Exynos 7885 octa-core SoC.
The Galaxy M series phones are likely to replace the present Galaxy J-series lineup and Samsung is expected to turn the heat on Xiaomi even as the company had shipments lesser than Xiaomi in two out of three quarters in 2018, according to Counterpoint Research. Reuters reported Samsung plans to double its online sales with the Galaxy M-series smartphones.
