Samsung could launch an A-series smartphone powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 to compete with Poco F1

A Twitter tipster posted that the South Korean giant could be working on a phone powered by the flagship chipset and that could be in retaliation to a flurry of budget flagships launched this year.

Samsung could be working on a mid-range flagship powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 platform. The South Korean giant announced last week that it will be unveiling a new Galaxy device at an event scheduled for October 11. The said device could have four cameras on its body. While no other details are confirmed, it’s rumoured that the phone will be from Samsung's A-series of smartphones, and if that’s the case, we can expect the smartphone to be priced significantly lesser than the flagship Galaxy S9 or the Galaxy Note 9.

The information comes from a tipster who goes by the alias @MMDDJ_ on Twitter and has more or less supplied accurate information about Samsung’s activities in the past. If that is indeed the case, it would be a first for Samsung to use a present-generation flagship chipset in a non-flagship smartphone. The company uses the Snapdragon 845 to power the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9 series in the US and some other markets.

It could be a possibility though as Samsung Mobile’s President DJ Koh went on record saying the company will bring cutting-edge features available only in its flagships to mid-range devices. “In the past, I brought the new technology and differentiation to the flagship model and then moved to the mid-end. But I have changed my strategy from this year to bring technology and differentiation points starting from the mid-end,” Koh told CNBC.

The change in the strategy could be a reaction to the flurry of budget flagships that launched this year. OnePlus and Asus offer flagship-grade hardware at not-so flagship prices, but Xiaomi’s Poco F1 (review) undercut them all by launching a flagship phone powered by the Snapdrago 845 for as low as Rs 20,999 for the base variant.

However, other rumours state that the upcoming smartphone in October is the Galaxy A9 Pro (2018) which will have four cameras and will be powered by the Snapdragon 710 processor. This does indicate that you should take this information with a pinch of salt and wait for more details to emerge.
