Reliance JioPhone deliveries reportedly pushed back to October 1

Reliance Jio was expected to start delivering the JioPhone to customers starting September 21. The company has now pushed back the availability to October 1.

JioPhone, the 4G feature phone from Reliance Jio won't ship on September 21. India Today reports that the company has further delayed the availability of JioPhone to October 1. "We got a message from the company (Jio) that the delivery has been postponed to October. The JioPhone delivery will start from October 1," a retailer told the website.

The JioPhone was announced on August 21 and it went for pre-order for the first time on August 24. Withing minutes of availability, Reliance Jio had issues handling the pre-orders and its MyJio app almost became unusable. The company suspended the pre-booking almost three days later due to an 'overwhelming response' and confirmed that it has received 6 million pre-bookings.

At the time of launch, Jio had said that it will make 5 million units of the JioPhone available every week starting mid-September. Having acquired over 130 million subscribers, JioPhone is an attempt to tap into 500 million feature phone users in the country. The feature phone is available at a one-time refundable deposit of Rs 1,500, which it plans to refund after 3 years. Reliance Jio is charging Rs 500 at the time of pre-booking while rest of the amount is to be paid at the time of delivery.

With JioPhone, Reliance Jio is offering an exclusive data plan of Rs 153 that giving benefit of 500MB 4G data per day, unlimited voice and SMS benefit and has a validity of 28 days. JioPhone users can also recharge with Rs 24 for two days validity and Rs 54 for a week long validity. Reliance Jio is yet to announce the official date for commencement of pre-booking again.
