Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoCs launched for upcoming Android flagships
HIGHLIGHTS

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 has the same core structure as the predecessor but with better clock speeds.

Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip is based on the TSMC process while the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 sticks to Samsung.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is a successor to the Snapdragon 778G.

Qualcomm has unveiled new processors for forthcoming high-end and mid-range flagships. There is the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 called Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Note, it is Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 and not Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. Then, there is the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 as a sequel to the Snapdragon 778G chipset. While Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is fabbed on a TSMC 4nm node, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is made on a Samsung 4nm process. They both come with improved power efficiency and performance (for SD 7 Gen 1, it is primarily on the gaming front).

Here are the details —

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 Specs and Features

Snapdragon 8+ gen 1

Qualcomm has increased the clock speeds of the cores including the graphics one. So, here’s what the chip layout is like now: 1x Cortex-X2 Prime Core @ 3.2GHz, 3x Cortex-A710 Performance Core @ 2.8GHz, and 4x Cortex-A510 Efficiency Core @ 2.0GHz frequency. This is coupled with the Adreno GPU with 10% performance gains over the precursor.

The chipmaker also boasts 10% faster CPU performance and overall up to 30% more power efficiency than the last-gen chip.

The rest of the setup is pretty much the same as Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

Qualcomm’s clients for this chip include Asus ROG, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Motorola, iQOO, Black Shark, Honor, Lenovo, etc.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Specs and Features

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 features a tri-cluster configuration including 1x ARM Cortex-A710 Prime core @2.4GHz, 3x ARM Cortex-A710 Performance cores @2.36GHz, and 4x ARM Cortex-A510 Efficiency cores @1.8GHz clock speed.

This one’s aimed at mobile gaming enthusiasts and offers features like “Adreno Frame Motion Engine” and 7th gen Qualcomm AI Engine. It also comes with support for up to 200 Megapixel Photo Capture, 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra Triple ISP, Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF System, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+, and a claim of up to 30% better AI performance than SD 778G.

You could expect Oppo, Xiaomi, and Honor, among other brands to launch their Snapdragon 7 Gen 1-powered phones in Q2, 2022.
