OnePlus details tech behind Warp Charge 30 on OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, says new charger can be used with older OnePlus phones
OnePlus explained the name Warp Charge, as expected, was inspired by science fiction where spaceships travel at warp speeds at the press of a button.
OnePlus launched the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition earlier this month. The phone’s highlight is not only the 10GB RAM under the hood, but more importantly the new fast charging standard OnePlus adopted. The phone charges through a new adapter called Warp Charge 30 that infuses 30 watts of current to the 3700mAh lithium-ion battery in the phone. Now, in a detailed post in the OnePlus community forum, a company staff member has detailed the tech behind Warp Charge 30.
The post claimed that the 30W fast charging is the fastest speed OnePlus has achieved so far in charging its phones. The Warp Charger is also compatible with older OnePlus phones right till the OnePlus 3. However, phones till the OnePlus 6T will only charge at regular Dash Charge speed. According to OnePlus, the Warp Charge 30 tech can charge the McLaren Edition OnePlus 6T to up to 70 percent in 20 minutes when the screen is off.
Interestingly, in the forum post, there was no mention of the company’s Dash Charge. Instead, OnePlus is now calling it regular Fast Charge. This comes after a reported trademark breach by OnePlus for using the word ‘Dash’ in its marketing in Europe, uncovered during the launch of the OnePlus 6 in London earlier this year.
Warp Charge 30 carries more current than the regular fast charging solutions. OnePlus doesn’t mention whether the current delivered is more than the previous Dash Charger. OnePlus claimed that even while sending higher current, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition heats up much lesser because majority of the power management and heat dissipation is shifted to the adapter. As a result, little heat reaches the phone.
The post also included a few graphs comparing the older Dash Charger with the Warp Charge 30. OnePlus claims the Warp Charge 30 charges the McLaren Edition much faster while gaming, and even when the screen is off, because the phone gets heated up much lesser.
The phone itself has added protection to keep from overheating. The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition has a revamped battery assembly where the company has used upgraded components and added an eight-layer protection board to the battery for more efficient cooling.
The post also busted some myths regarding the new braided Warp Charge cable. OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition users can also use the old red Dash Charge cable to charge the phone at Warp speed. On the other hand, users of older OnePlus phones can rely on the Warp Charge cable to charge, but there again, the phone will only charge at the regular Dash Charge speed.
Lastly, OnePlus explained the reason behind naming the tech Warp Charge. The name, as expect, was inspired from science fiction where spaceships travel at warp speeds at a press of a button.
We will be pitting the Warp Charge 30 against other fast charging standards like Super VOOC, Huawei Super Charge, Quick Charge and more to see who comes out as the winner. Stay tuned for that.
