OnePlus 9 series design not final yet

Launch of OnePlus 9 series could happen early in March 2021

OnePlus 9 could be a lightweight smartphone, CEO hints

OnePlus 9 Pro CAD-based renders were posted online last week and now OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has tweeted, shooting down the speculations around the design of the upcoming phone. OnePlus 9 series will reportedly launch as early as March 2021, a month ahead of its general launch cycle. Nevertheless, that has not stopped the rumour mill on getting tidbits about the successor to the OnePlus 8 series.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to Twitter and posted that “No design is ever set in stone. Because if it were, it wouldn't be a very lightweight smartphone.” The tweet indicates that the design of the OnePlus 9 series is undecided for now and hints at the possibility of the OnePlus 9 series to be lightweight than the previous generation. In comparison, the recently launched OnePlus 8T weighs 188 grams while the OnePlus 8 weighs 180 grams and OnePlus 8 Pro weighing in at 199 grams.

Lau’s tweet comes after popular leakster OnLeaks posted some renders of the upcoming OnePlus 9 Pro. The tipster mentioned that “the vast majority of its design is set in stone” but urged readers to keep in mind the developments that could alter the design especially the rear camera module. The tweet by the CEO, therefore, hints at the possibility of a new design for the OnePlus 9 series but it remains undecided.

Another report has allegedly revealed the camera details of the OnePlus 9 and the phone is expected to have a triple camera setup on the back. The OnePlus 9 is rumoured to have a 48MP primary camera with a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a macro or monochrome sensor. As for the OnePlus 9 Pro, it is expected to feature a quad-camera setup on the back with both phones supporting 120Hz refresh rates.

OnePlus 9 series leaked specifications

OnePlus 9 is expected to feature a 6.55-inch display while the OnePlus 9 Pro is rumoured to come with a 6.7-inch screen. Moreover, there are rumours that the screen supports 120Hz refresh rate and not 144Hz as was speculated previously.

OnePlus 9 series is rumoured to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 processor that’s due out in December. The leak indicates that the upcoming phones in the series could have IP68 certification, NFC and dual stereo speakers. The company could also provide the same 65W fast charging that it debuted with the OnePlus 8T in October along with support for 40W fast wireless charging.
