Motorola ships over one million Moto E, Moto G and Moto X combined via Flipkart in just 5 months.

Motorola which re-entered the Indian market in February this year has sold over one million smartphones in the last five months. The company currently offers Moto E, Moto G and Moto X exclusively via online ecommerce site Flipkart.com.

Motorola has managed to keep its operations cost low and logistics down by selling its devices via an online retailer. The company does not plan on changing its strategy anytime soon and will continue selling its devices exclusively via Flipkart.

Magnus Ahlqvist, corporate VP, Emea & Apac, Motorola Mobility stated that the company’s performance was phenomenal. “It proves that the business model that we chose was a really strong one. I don’t think we have achieved anything similar elsewhere,” he said.

Research firm IDC stated in a report that over 17.59 million smartphones were shipped in the first quarter of this year. Nokia sold over 7 lakh units which makes it the fifth largest vendor in India. Now Motorola by selling a whopping 1 million handsets, has become one of the top five mobile brands in the country.

Sachin Bansal, founder and CEO of Flipkart stated, "We believe these sales figures should put Motorola among the top five mobile brands in the country." He added, "Only by selling online and only by selling with one player, a player like Motorola is able to become one of the top five mobile brands in the country," said Bansal. And added, "Five years ago this would have been science fiction. Today it's a reality and we believe that's a trend that would continue for a long time."

Many handset makers are tying up exclusively with online e-commerce sites to sell their products. Celkon recently launched its Campus A35K smartphone in India in an exclusive partnership with online marketplace Snapdeal.com. Chinese vendor Xiaomi has also partnered with Flipkart to sell its smartphones and accessories in India.
