Next gen Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch to run on Tizen: Reports
HIGHLIGHTS

Next gen of Samsung's smartwatches, dubbed as the Galaxy Gear 2, will reportedly run on Tizen, an open source operating system.

Samsung will reportedly unveil two new versions of its Galaxy Gear smart watch next week at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona. Interestingly, one of the Galaxy Gears will reportedly run on Tizen, an open source operating system, which the company is helping develop.

The current Samsung Galaxy Gear devices run Google’s Android operating system. Unlike Samsung’s flagship smartphones, the Galaxy Gear received a mixed response. The device was criticised for limited capabilities, bulky design and poor battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear, however, marks first major move by Samsung in the wearable technology. It’s worth pointing out here other tech giants including the likes of Apple, Google, HTC and Microsoft are also working on their wearable products.

New operating system also indicates Samsung is now looking to move away from Google’s platform.

Sights are set on Samsung’s press conference on February 24 at the MWC 2014 where the company is slated to showcase its next flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S5. The next-gen Samsung Galaxy Gear and other new devices may be showcased on the same day as well.
