Rumours regarding a new smartphone launch by OnePlus have been circulating the internet for some time now. However, they were just rumours but the smartphone maker has confirmed a new device, which will be launched before the year ends. In an interview with the Financial Times, the company’s CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that a OnePlus 5G phone will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, sometime between October and December. While it is not confirmed what the handset would be called, speculations are rife that it could the rumoured OnePlus 7T Pro.
The timeline of OnePlus’ next launch also falls in line with its previous launches. The OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 5T, and the OnePlus 3T went up for sale in November in the year, which they were launched. "We believe with the development of 5G technology next year we can have an [even] better performance, with the upcoming 5G era approaching, we are going to invest more," Lau told FT in a statement. While OnePlus already has a 5G capable device in its lineup with the OnePlus 7 Pro, it is available only in a handful of regions and with select carriers. The upcoming new OnePlus 5G handset is said to get a global release.
The confirmation of a new smartphone launch from OnePlus doesn’t come as a surprise and the only new bit would be the presence of 5G connectivity on it. The OnePlus 7T Pro was previously leaked in an alleged live image, which showed off the phone in a casing that hides its design. However, there are no thick bezels and no notch, which hint at a pop-up camera design similar to the current OnePlus 7 Pro. The device was running on a beta build of Android Q. The upcoming handset is most likely to be powered by the Snapdragon 855+ chip, which was recently announced.
In other OnePlus news, the company recently confirmed the name and logo of its upcoming television. It will simply be called the OnePlus TV and as per the company, it will be its first smart display/TV device. “The OnePlus TV will feature smart capabilities coupled with the company’s ‘burden-less’ design philosophy to offer users a smooth and connected experience,” OnePlus stated in its press release. There are no details about the OnePlus TV yet, but we expect more information to leak out as its launch nears.
