Moto G5, G5 Plus with metal design and improved cameras launching at MWC

Moto G5 and G5 Plus will feature a 5-inch and 5.2-inch full HD display respectively, indicating a compact form factor. The previous gen Moto G4 came with a 5.5-inch display.

Lenovo Moto G5 and G5 Plus are one of the most anticipated smartphones at MWC this year. Motorola has sent out the invite for its event on February 26, where the company will announce the new G5 series. The smartphone is also expected to go on sale immediately after its MWC announcement.

While we have seen quite a few leaks about the device in the past, a new leak from noted tipster Evan Blass reveals full specifications. Blass notes that full specifications were leaked online by e-tailer Ktronix and has been pulled down. The biggest change this year is likely in the design of the phone. The leaked images reveal that smartphones will use a unibody metal enclosure and a circular image sensor like the Moto Z lineup.

Moto G5 and G5 Plus will also house a smaller display with a 1080p resolution. Moto has shrunk the displays on G5 and G5 Plus to 5-inch and 5.2-inch respectively. The Moto G5 will come with 2GB RAM, 32GB storage and the Snapdragon 430 chipset. The larger plus version will offer 2GB RAM, 64GB storage and Snapdragon 625 processor. The Moto G5 Plus will also come with 4GB RAM like the G4 Plus.

Blass says that the Moto G5 Plus will feature a 12MP main camera with dual pixel autofocus while the G5 will support a 13MP sensor with PDAF support. Both the models will offer a 5MP selfie camera. The battery capacity is likely to be same as its predecessors. The newer battery efficient processors and smaller screens should give the upcoming Moto G5 and G5 plus a slight edge in battery life.

A recent rumour indicated that the Moto G5 series will be cheaper than its predecessor. Lenovo seems to be going after the likes of Xiaomi in the budget category with its new G5 range. With stock-like Android build and timely update cycles, the Moto G5 and G5 Plus seem to be well poised to challenge Lenovo's line-up in the affordable segment.
