Motorola responds after users spot strange Amazon app redirects on Moto phones: Here is what the company said

Motorola recently came under the spotlight after some users noticed unusual behaviour while opening the Amazon shopping app on Moto phones. Instead of launching the app directly, affected devices briefly opened a browser window with a suspicious-looking link before finally redirecting users to Amazon. Now, the brand has officially addressed the issue.

The issue was first reported by a Reddit user, who claimed that their Motorola Razr 60 Ultra was sending requests to a website linked to Device Native, a Motorola-affiliated advertising company. The user also found that the problem appeared to be connected to Motorola’s preloaded Smart Feed app.

Later, 9to5Google also spotted the same behaviour on a Motorola Razr Fold running version 2.03.0070 of the Smart Feed app.  The discovery raised concerns among users, with some questioning whether Motorola was intentionally using affiliate redirects to earn revenue from app launches.

Motorola has now responded to the reports in a statement shared with Android Authority. The company said the issue was not intentional and that the problem has already been fixed.

‘Recently, Motorola acted quickly to resolve an issue that was identified, which caused some users in the US launching the Amazon Shopping app to be routed through a web tracking link before opening the app. This behavior was unintended and resulted in an inconsistent user experience,’ the company was quoted as saying. ‘Upon identifying the issue, we promptly corrected the routing configuration. Users can now expect all installed apps to launch directly as intended.’

Motorola added that it takes ‘user experience, privacy, and platform integrity seriously and will continue to closely monitor the system to ensure expected behaviour across devices.’

So, users do not need to do anything, as the issue has already been corrected through updated routing settings.
