Moto to launch Razr as a foldable smartphone

The phone will go on sale next year

The Razr could come packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 or a Snapdragon 710

The year 2019 has been all about the foldable smartphones, with Samsung and Huawei creating quite a buzz around their devices. During the Mobile World Congress this year, there were a number of other OEMs that also expressed the intent to launch foldable devices, Motorola not being one of them. However, according to a report by CNET, it appears that Motorola may be gearing up to reveal its foldable smartphone, the Razr, before the end of this year.

Motorola has allegedly been working on a secretive foldable smartphone for quiet some time now. The company had even filed a patent back in 2017 for a foldable smartphone which showed that Moto’s device would follow a design that is similar to the older Razr phone and not that of the newer ones by Samsung or Huawei.

According to CNET, Motorola may not sell the phone this year, but the plan is to atleast reveal the device to the world before the year 2020 begins. Rumours of Motorola bringing back the Razr brand have been circulating for quiet some time, but this is the first time we’re hearing the Razr being Moto’s foldable smartphone. According to XDA who had earlier revelaed the possible specs of the device, the Razr could come packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 or a Snapdragon 710, along with 4/6GB of RAM and a 6.2 inch OLED display that would fold vertically, just like the original Razr used to.

As of now, various companies have shown off working prototypes of foldable smartphones. Samsung is expected to finally ship the Galaxy Fold to customers, while Huawei’s Mate X missed its original launch timeline, with no word on when the company would start shipping devices. TCL had also shown off various working prototypes of foldable smartphones at MWC 2019, with the goal of providing the people with affordable, foldable smartphones. Hopefully, Moto can follow up the big reveal with actual devices being available in the market.
