HIGHLIGHTS

Indian smartphone vendor Micromax is looking to expand overseas with its high end phones.

Micromax India’s no 2 smartphone manufacturer is planning to expand overseas and launch its high end smartphones globally. The Indian manufacturer which started selling affordable devices for the budget consumer has slowly gained market share and has reportedly sold more than 6.8 million phones in July-Sept 2013 quarter. The company is expected to surpass revenues of $1 Billion in this fiscal year.

Micromax ranks third in India after Nokia and Samsung in total mobile phone sales. The company sold nearly 6.8 million phones of which 2.2 Million were smartphones in the July-Sept quarter. The manufacturer sells affordable phones starting from Rs 3000 with comparable features to high end devices at half the price.

The domestic brand built its market share in India with big screen, low cost, dual-SIM phones that other manufacturers were slow to catch on. To keep costs low, Micromax mostly uses chipsets made by MediaTek and Spreadtrum. The company currently outsources production to Taiwan and China but will soon start assembling some phones at a plant in northern India from next quarter.

The Indian manufacturer is now eyeing global markets and has launched its smartphones in Russia followed by Romania in January this year. Apart from the budget mobile phones, the company is also planning to launch high end smartphone with octa-core processors, 16 MP cameras and high definition screen globally.

Micromax recently launched the Canvas Turbo with Hugh Jackman as its brand ambassador – in a bid to give the brand a more global image. The phablet boasts of a 5-inch Full HD CGS display screen. It has a 1.5Ghz quad-core MediaTek MT6589T processor with 2GB of RAM and runs Android 4.2.1. The Canvas Turbo has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. It has 16GB built-in storage.
