Looks like 2013 is going to see a plethora of 1080p HD capable 5-inch displays on smartphones. Recently HTC launched its Butterfly J and is now rumoured to launch another 5-inch device dubbed as the Droid DNA, codenamed HTC Deluxe. Sony, Sharp and LG are also rumoured to be working on such devices. And now the latest to join the bandwagon is the PC maker, Lenovo.
According to an Engadget report, a Lenovo phablet with 5-inch 1080p display and other new features is in the works. The device emerged on Sina Weibo (China’s Twitter-like microblogging website), however was deleted soon after. The screenshots showed the device running on a customised Lenovo Android UI on a 1080p display.
There’s also dual-SIM support, as screenshots showed its connected to China Telecom’s CDMA2000 network and China Mobile’s 2G network simultaneously.
“Our own source wouldn’t directly confirm that it’s a five-inch display on this mysterious phone, but we were told that it’ll be somewhere between 4.5 inches and 5.5 inches — we’ll take that as a yes, especially since the only 1080p mobile panels available right now are the five-inch, 440ppi ones from Sharp and JDI. Our source also said the phone’s entered DVT (Design Verification Test) phase for some time, so it might not be long before we hear an official announcement in China,” says the Engadget report.
The rumours of a Lenovo smartphone comes amid reports Sony’s preparations for a Galaxy S III and iPhone rival next year. In the meanwhile, there are rumours on the web of a Sony C600X smartphone being in the works, featuring a quad-core Krait processor, a 5-inch Full HD (1080p) display and a 13MP camera.
