JioPhone pre-bookings suspended: 4 million pre-bookings confirmed and Reliance Jio claims overwhelming response for its 4G feature phone
HIGHLIGHTS

Reliance Jio has suspended the pre-bookings for its JioPhone due to an overwhelming response. The company says that 4 million people have pre-booked the 4G feature phone and fresh pre-bookings will resume at a later stage.

Reliance Jio has suspended pre-bookings of the JioPhone after an 'overwhelming response' for its 4G feature phone. The Jio servers crashed and the MyJio app became unusable soon after the pre-bookings began at 5.30PM on Thursday. The JioPhone is no longer available for pre-booking and the company has not shared specific timeline as to when the 4G feature phone will be available for pre-booking again. The company, however, confirmed that pre-bookings have touched the 4 million marks.

"Millions have pre-booked the JioPhone. We will inform you when pre-booking resumes," the company posted on its website. The Jio website is now asking individuals and businesses to register interest for the device and will notify them when the 4G handset becomes available online for pre-bookings once again. Those who have managed to pre-book the device can check the status of their JioPhone under the 'My Vouchers' section on MyJio app. Alternately they can check the status by calling '18008908900' and sharing the mobile number used to register for the JioPhone.

To recall, the JioPhone was announced last month as a device to tap into the 500 million feature phone users who are yet to experience 4G communication. The JioPhone is available at an effective price of Rs 0 but buyers need to pay Rs 1,500 as a refundable one-time security deposit. The company is charging Rs 500 at the time of pre-booking while rest of the amount needs to be paid at the time of delivery.

Reliance Jio is planning to make 5 million units of JioPhone available every week and those who pre-booked on Thursday will be the first to get the device. The official delivery is expected to begin sometime in September. With JioPhone, Reliance Jio is offering an exclusive Rs 153 plan with data benefit of 500MB per day along with unlimited voice and free 300 SMS benefit, a validity of 28 days. The company is also offering sachet recharges of Rs 54 for a week and Rs 24 for two days validity.
