Indian smartphone market down by 6pct in Q1 2025, Apple and Motorola show strong growth: IDC
Apple recorded 23% YoY growth, shipping three million units, with iPhone 16 dominating the premium segment.
Offline channels gained a 58% market share, while online shipments fell by 21.1%.
Qualcomm-powered smartphones saw 40.8% YoY growth, while MediaTek's share dropped to 43.6%.
The Indian smartphone market fell 6 per cent year on year in the first quarter of 2025, shipping 32 million units, according to the most recent data from IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. According to the report, this is the second consecutive quarter of decline, driven by low consumer demand and excess inventory. Even after the downturn, brands such as Apple and Motorola have experienced strong growth, while Xiaomi, Poco, and OnePlus have struggled with declining shipments.
Apple reportedly shipped a record three million units during the quarter, indicating a 23% YoY growth. The iPhone 16 was the most shipped device in the premium segment, accounting for over 32% of all shipments. However, Samsung and Vivo continue to dominate the offline market, while Motorola has experienced tremendous growth and is now at the top of the online segment.

According to the report, the average selling price of smartphones in India rose to US$274, representing a 4% increase year on year. The mass-budget segment (US$100-US$200) decreased by 21.9% year on year, while the premium segment (US$600-US$800) increased by 78.6% due to high demand for Apple’s iPhone 16 and Samsung Galaxy A56. 5G smartphone shipments made up 88% of the total, with 29 million 5G devices shipped during the quarter, up from 69% in 1Q24.
About the offline channel, reports indicate that it gained greater traction than the online segment, expanding by 10% year over year and gaining over 58% of the market. On the other hand, online shipments decreased by 21.1%. The report stated that Vivo led the offline market, followed by Oppo and Samsung. Motorola and Samsung have dominated the online marketplace.
According to the report, shipments of Qualcomm-powered smartphones increased by 40.8% year on year, with budget models such as the Xiaomi Redmi 14C leading the way. The MediaTek share fell to 43.6% due to a 25.5% drop in shipments.
