HIGHLIGHTS

Reports suggest that the company may be planning to hold a separate event for the unveiling of the HTC U12, possibly in March or April

It seems like HTC will not be unveiling its next flagship smartphone, the HTC U12, at next month’s Mobile World Congress. As per a report by Android Headlines, the company may instead hold a separate event after MWC, possibly in March or April. It was also noted that the name of the phone has not yet been confirmed by the company.

Leaks and renders suggest that HTC’s upcoming smartphone will sport an 18:9 display aspect ratio with a near bezel-less design. Further, the company is expected to stick by its decision to skip the 3.5mm audio jack, while the fingerprint sensor may be moved to the rear of the device. Besides this, the HTC U12 is expected to offer a 4K display and may be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. It is also tipped to feature a dual-rear camera setup.

The reason for not unveiling the phone at MWC is not yet known but it could be to avoid clashing with Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus smartphones. A recent report suggested that Xiaomi was also following suite by not unveiling its Mi 7 smartphone at the event. The Chinese company may instead unveil its new Surge S2 chipset along with and upgraded version of its Mi Mix 2 smartphone called the Mi Mix 2s. LG is also not expected to unveil the G7 at MWC this year as the company may have asked the team working on the phone to start from scratch. However, Sony might unveil its flagship smartphone, the Xperia XZ Pro at the event. The phone is tipped to feature a 4K OLED display and may be powered by a Snapdragon 845 SoC. The phone is tipped to come with a dual-rear camera.
