Whilst everyone is talking about the latest Android version 4.1 Jelly Bean, there are millions of smartphone users who are still waiting for the update to version 4.0, better known as Ice Cream Sandwich. The wait for the ICS update, however, has to come to an abrupt ending for HTC Desire HD users, with HTC confirming that the device will not be receiving the update.
HTC, one of the first manufacturers to adopt the Jelly Bean OS, has crossed out the Desire HD from the official list of the devices, scheduled to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update.
HTC has also added footnote stating:
After extensive testing, we’ve determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers.
Rumours that HTC will not be releasing the ICS update for Desire HD had been circulating for some time. Telus, a Canadian carrier, had published a list that stated “upgrade cancelled” for the Desire HD. The cancellation of the update, however, surprised many as the device sported same processor as the HTC One V and has more RAM. It’s notable the One V comes with ICS straight out of the box.
Telus says the Desire HD 4.0 update has been cancelled due to “poor device performance during testing”
This means HTC Desire HD users looking to update the device are left with an option of installing the OS through an unfashioned route, which will require rooting your handset.
Cnet it its report, however, points out that a similar situation had risen last year when HTC claimed the original Desire would not receive 2.3 Gingerbread OS but then later said a modified version of Android 2.3 would be released.
