Honor Play gaming smartphone with Kirin 970, GPU Turbo launching in India on August 6
HIGHLIGHTS

The Honor Play is a gaming-centric smartphone which was launched in China last month. It will be an Amazon exclusive in India. The launch of the Honor Play in India is strategically scheduled just two days ahead of the launch of Xiaomi’s Mi A2 in the country.

The Honor Play smartphone will launch in India on August 6. Amazon India has started teasing the launch of the device on its website, with a ‘Notify Me’ button for users who are interested in purchasing the new phone.

The Honor Play is a gaming-centric smartphone and was the first phone to launch with Huawei’s proprietary GPU Turbo tech to enhance performance and graphic processing efficiency. GPU Turbo is also expected to be rolled out to other Honor and Huawei devices, including the newly launched Honor 9N. Here is a list of all the devices that are slated to get GPU Turbo in the future.

In terms of specs, the Honor Play sports a 6.3-inch IPS LCD full HD+ display with an 89 percent screen-to-body ratio. The phone is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 970 processor with a dedicated Neural-Network Processing Unit (NPU) to power AI features. The phone comes with an option of choosing between 4GB and 6GB RAM. Both the RAM variants of the Honor Play come with 64GB of memory on-board. It is expected that Honor will only launch the 6GB/128GB variant of the phone in India, since the Amazon teaser does not mention a 4GB variant at all.

When it comes to camera, the Honor Play features dual primary cameras at the back, comprising of 16-megapixel and 2-megapixel units with Dual AF and Artificial Intelligence (AI) scene recognition. At the front is a 16-megapixel lens with AI portrait feature and 3D portrait lighting support.

Further, the phone is supported by a large 3,750mAh battery, given that it is aimed at mobile gamers. GPU Turbo on the phone is also capable of reducing the System on Chip (SoC) energy consumption by 30 percent, so one can expect the phone to last long on a single charge. For software, the Honor Play runs Android Oreo 8.1-based EMUI 8.2.

In China, the phone is available in Aurora Blue, Black, Violet, and Red colour variants at a starting price of 1,999 yuan (approximately Rs 21,000). The Amazon.in teaser suggests that the company will launch the Aurora Blue and Black variants in India. However, the India price of the phone is not known yet. Given that it launches just two days ahead of the Xiaomi Mi A2 in the country, one can expect Honor to price the Honor Play in competition with Xiaomi’s new Android One smartphone.
