HMD Global reportedly confirms Android P update for Nokia 3, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 8

Nokia’s Android powered smartphone family is not only going to get the Android O update, but the Android P udate as well. During a Q&A session, Shannon Mead, country manager (Philippines), HMD Global, announced that all the Android powered Nokia phones – the Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3 will get two years of software support including an update to the next version of Android in 2018. As of now, all the Nokia Android phones run on Android 7 Nougat out of the box. The Nokia 8 is expected to get the Android O update by the end of October and the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 are expected to get the update before the end of 2017.

Coming to the specifications, the Nokia 8 sports a 5.3-Inch QHD screen with an 'Always On' display, which is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 835 platform and comes with 4GB RAM coupled with 64GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card. The device features a 13MP dual-camera setup on the rear and a 13MP front-facing camera. Its cameras come with ZEISS optics. The Nokia 8 is powered by a 3,090mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support.

The Nokia 6 has a 5.5-inch Full HD display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 platform with 3GB of RAM. At the back is a 16MP camera, while at the front is an 8MP camera. The device offers 32GB of storage and is equipped with a 3000mAh battery. The phone also comes with Dolby Atmos support. 

The Nokia 5 features a 5.2-inch 720p display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 platform with 2GB of RAM. The device is equipped with a 3000mAh battery and offers 16GB of on-board storage expandable via a microSD card. At the back is a 13MP camera, while at the front is an 8MP camera.

The Nokia 3 sports a 5-inch HD display and is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT 6737 with 2GB of RAM. The device offers 16GB of storage expandable via a microSD card and is equipped with a 2630mAh. The phone comes with 8MP cameras at the front and back.

We however would be vary of the promise of Android P coming to some of the phones. When Motorola launched its Moto G4 Plus smartphone, it promised that the device would receive the Android N and Android O updates. However, when the company recently revealed a list of its smartphones in line to get the Android O update, the Moto G4 Plus was missing from it. Android Police (via a Reddit user) noticed that the company has silently removed all references to its Moto G4 Plus receiving the Oreo update. Moto has however released a statement about the same.
