Government disconnects over 51,000 phone numbers for pesky calls

The government has disconnected more than 51,000 unregistered phone numbers that were being used for the telemarketing activities till July 2012. Moreover, notices were served to nearly 88,300 subscribers for similar violations. The revelation was made by Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Milind Deora in a written reply to Rajya Sabha last week.

The Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2010, says subscribers who are not registered with TRAI as telemarketers are not allowed to make commercial communications.

The minister further revealed that the data provided by the service providers show that maximum number of complaints for pesky calls are against unauthorised telecom subscribers. As per the guidelines, if a subscriber is found operating telemarketing activities with an unregistered number, he/she will served notice by the originating access provider for discontinuing the service immediately.

Deora adds the government is aware about such SMSs and calls being made by unregistered subscribers from normal telephone connections having numbers other than the 140 series, exclusively allotted for telemarketers.

It’s not the first time authorities have taken action against telemarketers. The government had imposed a cap of 200 SMSs per day per SIM. Earlier this year, the telecom regulatory body revealed it had disconnected 26,769 subscribers and issued notices to 36,156 subscribers for sending pesky SMSes and making unsolicited calls. The regulator further said it had penalised 94 telemarketers and blacklisted four other telemarketers for violating its SMS Spam regulations.
