Google X lab is developing new technology that could lead to longer lasting batteries for consumer products.
Google's X Lab team is developing new technology that could improve battery efficiency and power to last longer, according to reports.
WSJ reports Google X research lab has a four member team lead by former Apple Inc. battery expert Dr. Ramesh Bhardwaj that is working on a secret project to revolutionize battery tech. In 2012, the team had started testing batteries developed by others for use in Google devices. In 2013, the research lab started looking at battery technologies that the internet giant might develop itself.
Dr. Bhardwaj also revealed that Google is working on at least 20 battery-dependent projects. The new battery tech that could be used in consumer products like Google Glass allowing them to last longer on a single charge. It would also work with X lab's smart contact lenses, allowing users to wear them for an extended period of time. The internet giants self-driving car runs on batteries recharged by electricity.
Google is also working with Chicago-based AllCell Technologies LLC to improved batteries for four hardware projects, including Project Loon, according to sources. The technology could also help the company in other fields including transportation, robotics and communications. In 2013 Chief Executive Larry Page told analysts that battery life for mobile devices is a “huge issue” with “real potential to invent new and better experiences.”
Apart from Google, other tech giants like Apple and Tesla Motors are also working on developing new technology to improve battery life and efficiant. Reportedly, Tesla is opening a Gigafactory to produce batteries, while electronics giant Apple is also forming a "large scale battery division."
