Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro users face battery swelling issues: Here’s what to do
Dozens of Pixel 7/7 Pro users report swollen batteries, detached screens, and safety hazards.
Google’s response inconsistent: some get free swaps, others charged over $130.
Pressure builds on Google to extend Pixel 7a’s free replacement program to the entire Pixel 7 lineup.
What started as an isolated issue with the Pixel 7a is happening with the entire Pixel 7 lineup. In recent months, an increasing number of Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro owners have reported swollen batteries causing screens and back panels to lift or detach. The problem is reported with Google’s flagship hardware, just months after Pixel 6a battery fire reports forced the company to pause sales of refurbished models.
SurveyAccording to a report by Android Authority, dozens of complaints have surfaced across Google’s support forums and Reddit about a similar issue. Many users have reported that their devices are still under two years old, and catastrophic battery swelling is not typically expected at such an early stage.
One of the Reddit users posted, “Screen completely detached, never exposed to heat. Two years old. This is a serious safety hazard.” Another user said their repair shop warned that the defect could recur even after a battery replacement, calling the fix a “50/50 chance.”
Google’s response to the issue has been inconsistent. While some affected users have received free battery swaps or even entire device replacements, others, however, claim they were quoted $130 or more for out-of-warranty repairs. Several users even shared that they were told the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are not eligible under the free replacement program Google introduced earlier this year for Pixel 7a owners. As per the program, the tech giant offers complimentary battery replacements and up to $456 in compensation.
With the Pixel 7 series now showing identical symptoms, pressure is mounting on Google to extend the free replacement program to its higher-end devices.
Battery problems have been a persistent issue for Pixel users. The Pixel 6a was reported to have multiple cases of battery issues in 2023, while previous generations also suffered battery swelling.

What to do?
For now, users are recommended to stop using the device and avoid charging it if they spot any swelling issues. They are also advised to document the damage with photos and escalate with Google support.
