Google Pixel 3 Camera receives DXO Mark score

Google Pixel 3 Camera receives DXO Mark score
HIGHLIGHTS

Google Pixel 3 has undergone the testing at DXOMark, earning it a final score of 101

DxO Mark, the popular camera testing company has finally released the scores of the Google Pixel 3 camera. After weeks of testing, the Google Pixel 3 scored 101 on DXO’s tests, a number that seems to be in-line with most flagship smartphone cameras that have come out this year. The Google Pixel 3 ties with the Apple iPhone XR (Review), another single lens flagship smartphone camera, with a score of 101.

The Google Pixel 3 scored 103 for its photos and 98 for its video output. The photo score ranks the Pixel’s autofocus performance and exposure as the best, with scores of 98 and 92 respectively. Surprisingly, DXO gave the Pixel’s ability to retain texture a mere 74, which seems to be on the lower side as in our own camera tests, we have found the Pixel to have very impressive detail retention for a smartphone. The video scores of the Pixel are not that impressive, which makes sense, given the average audio quality. DXO did say that the Pixel’s image stabilization was very impressive, giving it a score of 98.

Reading DXO’s analysis of a camera’s performance is far more informative and rewarding than just glancing over the scores. Given that DXO refuses to reveal the scoring logic and scoring scales, the numbers are only relative to each other. What this also means is that there is no real way to compare, objectively, the performance of the Pixel’s primary camera with the primary camera of a smartphone with dual cameras.

Some readers may feel that the Google Pixel 3 has received a lower score than it should have, which would make sense given the Pixel’s lack of a secondary camera. However, given that the Pixel 3 has scored higher than the Samsung Galaxy S9+, a dual camera smartphone, it could be assumed that the number of cameras does not play a major role in the overall score. With no clarity on the scoring process, the weightages and the scale, DXO’s scores for smartphone cameras remain numbers of relevance only in comparison to each other.
