HIGHLIGHTS

Rumours suggest that the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus will have a 5020mAh battery and sport a 6-inch AMOLED Full HD display

Information circulating the internet suggests that Gionee is set to launch the Marathon M5 Plus in China on December 21, four days before Star Wars: The Force Awakens releases in India (we really are excited to watch this movie!) Coming back to the Marathon M5 Plus, the smartphone is speculated to house a 6-inch AMOLED display with 1920×1080 pixels resolution. Under the hood, the device has 3GB of RAM and a MediaTek processor, exact specifications of which are yet unknown. Coming to the optics, the rear of the M5 Plus will house a 13MP camera, and the front will have a 5MP camera. The USP of the phone is, of course, the 5020mAh battery. Keeping the size and weight of the battery in mind, the device is expected to be 8.2mm thick, and weigh 206 grams.

It looks like Gionee really wants to stand out with large battery packs on its phones. Recently, the company announced the Marathon M5 in India, priced at Rs. 17,999. The Gionee Marathon M5 comes with a huge 6020mAh battery, which Gionee claims is enough for a talk time of 65 hours, and is capable of charging two other phones through reverse charging. The device also comes with a 5.5-inch HD AMOLED screen, and is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6735 SoC with 3GB of RAM. The Marathon M5 has 32GB of built-in storage, expandable by upto 128GB. The rear houses a 13MP camera, and the front has a 5MP camera. The phone runs Gionee’s Amigo 3.1 UI layered over Android Lollipop v5.1, and it has an IR blaster as well.

Gionee isn’t the only smartphone maker gunning for the top spot of a smartphone with large battery packs. We have recently seen the Oukitel K10000, with a 10000mAh battery. We have also seen the Lenovo Vibe P1 and P1m in India. The Vibe P1 has a 5000mAh battery, and is priced at Rs. 15,999, and the Vibe P1m has a 4000mAh battery, and is priced at Rs. 7,999.

Battery tech may not be where it should be, especially where smartphones are concerned, but it is nice to see companies installing large capacity batteries in their smartphone. Will we see a 5000mAh iPhone, anytime soon?
