DoT to test technology to locate mobile phones in real time
The Department of Telecom (DoT) is planning to run a pilot project to test a new technology that will help the authorities to track lost or cloned mobile phones on a real time basis. The department is planning to adopt a technology that has been developed Telecordia to track cellphones in real time.
According to a Times of India report, Telecom Secretary R Chandrashekhar has directed the officials concerned to start working on the proposals made by MNP Interconnection Telecom Solution of installing Central Device Information Registry (CDIR). MNP Interconnection is one of the companies that is working with the government on Mobile Number Portability (MNP) scheme.
“The technology seems “worthwhile” to top DoT officials and the Secretary is of the view that trials can be conducted at no cost to the government to assess the utility of the proposal,” TOI quotes sources as saying.
According to the report, Telecordia, stakeholders in MNP Interconnection, has developed the CDIR, the technology that consolidates real time and non-real time. The technology is said to resolve the issue of tracking lost/stolen mobile phones and also help in invalid device blocking, counterfeiting and cloning detection.
Before running the trial, the department of telecom is making sure that there’s no misuse of data gathered by MITS during the pilot project.
