Champion Computers Pvt. Ltd has announced plans to set up its manufacturing facility for mobile devices in Himachal Pradesh, India. The company will initially start manufacturing mobile phones and subsequently will concentrate on Tablet PCs.

Champion is known for making BSNL phones. According to the company, it has entered a strategic alliance with BSNL last year to introduce series of new mobile computing devices including smart phones, tablets, data cards and wireless networking products. Champion claims to have sold over 1 lakh devices.

“With the growing demands and constantly evolving market, commencing of our own facility will assist us to have an edge over the competitors. Post our association with BSNL this would be another step ahead to establish ourselves further in the country. Our facility will be operational from June end and we expect to manufacture 1lakh units per month in the initial phase. We are targeting to triple it by the end of the year,” says Kapil Wadhwa, Managing Director at Champion Computers Pvt. Ltd.

Champion will be among the few companies to launch made in India phones in the country. Micromax, which holds the second largest market share, started manufacturing handsets at its Rudraprayag facility in Uttarakhand.

Smartphone companies, especially the Indian ones, are severely criticised for launching Chinese products in the country. It's notable the new NDA-led government has stressed on local manufacturing. Looking at the trend, we are likely to see more companies setting up local manufacturing units in India in the near future.
