BlackBerry Priv will not get Android 7.0 Nougat update, confirms company
HIGHLIGHTS

BlackBerry Priv, the first Android smartphone from the Canadian company won't be receiving Android 7.0 Nougat update. The Priv was launched with Android 5.0 Lollipop in 2015 and received Android 6.0 Marshmallow update last year.

BlackBerry Priv, the first Android smartphone from the Canadian company will not receive Android 7.0 Nougat update. Alex Thurber, GM of Mobility Solutions at BlackBerry confirmed that the Priv launched in 2015 won't be getting the Nougat update.

While speaking on UTB Blogs, Thurber said that Priv has already received one major update in the form of Marshmallow last year and added that it is next to impossible to bring all partners together for another major update. He also seemingly confirmed that company's DTEK series of devices won't be getting any update either. Crackberry notes that Priv and other devices will continue to receive security updates but major software updates won't be pushed to these devices.

Thurber describers DTEK series of devices as transition products designed for testing the reality of licensing model. With TCL now licensing the brand name, the DTEK50 and DTEK60 might lose out on software updates. BlackBerry KEYone, the last smartphone designed in-house by BlackBerry, will receive Android 8.0 Oreo update. He also confirmed that new devices coming from TCL will also receive Oreo update depending upon the market.

During the hour long podcast, Thurber also shared more details on company's plans around licensing model. He confirmed that BlackBerry encourages its phone licensee partners to work together and KEYone will be manufactured by its India partner Optiemus in the coming weeks.

With the sales of BlackBerry smartphones declining globally, the Canadian company has pivoted to software and has started licensing its brand names to other smartphone makers. BlackBerry smartphones will now be made by TCL globally while Optiemus Infracom will be responsible for its India operations.
