Asus joins Make in India initiative, ties up with Foxconn
Asus aims to produce 1.5 lakh smartphones per month and wants to achieve 5 percent market share in the country within a year.
Taiwanese manufacturer Asus has today announced that it has tied up with Foxconn to start manufacturing smartphones in India. In a bid to expand its presence in the rapidly growing Indian smartphone market, it will make the Zenfone 2 Laser and Zenfone Go at Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.
Following the lead of Oppo, Xiaomi and Gionee, Asus will now start making smartphones at Foxconn’s facility in Sri City. “India offers us a huge opportunity as smartphone penetration is just 10%. We are excited to announce our local manufacturing facility that will cater to the growing demands of the market,” said Peter Chang, Regional Head (South Asia) of Asus. The company will start off by manufacturing the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser, followed by the Zenfone Go. It aims to manufacture 1.5 lakh smartphones a month by the end of the current fiscal year. It will reportedly account for almost 80 percent of the sales in India. Chang said, “We are aggressively targeting the Indian market. We aim to achieve 5% market share in the country by next year and empower all our customers with luxury.”
A host of smartphone makers have announced their plans to manufacture and assemble their devices in India. Gionee, Oppo and Xiaomi have also partnered with Foxconn. Xiaomi’s Redmi 2 Prime are already being assembled at Sri City. Lenovo has also announced that it will manufacture its own smartphones, as well as Motorola’s, from its plant in Sriperumbudur, Chennai. Moto E phones have been rolling out from the Chennai plant for a while now. Sony is also reportedly in the process of tying up with Foxconn.
The smartphone market in India is growing at a rapid pace. Smartphone makers are naturally keen to cash in on the burgeoning market. “The Indian government’s focus on ‘Make in India’ has opened a plethora of opportunities for international companies. It is an opportune time to make the announcement as it will enable us to bring our cutting edge products to consumers who are looking for features and design sensibilities of a high-end smartphone at an economic price,” Chang further added.
