Apple to soon get Government nod for opening India retail stores

Apple to soon get Government nod for opening India retail stores
HIGHLIGHTS

Although the initial paperwork filed by Apple was faulty, the company is rectifying the issue and the Indian Government is keen on approving its India retail store plans.

Last Month, it was revealed that Apple is in talks with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) to open exclusive Apple retail stores in the country. Now, It seems like Apple is on track with its plans. According to a report by Bloomberg, the Indian Government is keen on approving Apple's plans of opening its own retail stores across the country. As per the report, Apple's initial paperwork for the retail store was submitted with some formatting errors but the company is fixing the issue and the Indian Government is keen on expediting the process of approval. There is still no specific date mentioned for the approval or for the opening of the first store, but those details are expected to be revealed soon.

While this may be good news for Apple, there is a small catch. Policy in India dictates that a foreign company needs to manufacture 30% of its goods in India to be able to operate retail stores in the country. Apple may be able to go around this as according to the report, it may qualify as "a provider of cutting-edge technology," exempting the company from the rule.

Last year, Apple opened its first few stores in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, marking its entry into the Arab Emirates. The stores came up next to High Street luxury fashion brands like Fendi, Burberry, Armani, etc. Both stores are state-of-the-art, and giagntic in size. We hope to see such stores in India as well. What say?
